Torchwood: Children of Earth (SPOILERS)

WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SERIES 3 OF TORCHWOOD. DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE SEEN IT OR ARE HAPPY TO BE SPOILED.

HOLY CRAP, that was bleak. It pulled your guts out through your stomach, slammed them with a mallet, then tore your heart from your chest and tenderised that for good measure, so that in the end you were left gutted and empty, a sad whistling in your throat as Jack Harkness ran from the death and destruction.

I knew it was going to be bad. Ianto's death left me under no illusions. But I still wasn't prepared for Jack having to sacrifice his OWN GRANDCHILD to beat the aliens. Urgh, the shaking and the bleeding, and Alice having to WATCH (good parallel with what happened to Clem, though). And Jack having to sacrifice someone ELSE to save the Earth after what he just went through with Ianto and knowing that his daughter will NEVER forgive him. (Speaking of Alice, why isn't Johnson dead? She promised that she'd kill Johnson if anything happened to Steven.)

I'm really glad they didn't bring Ianto back, though. A resurrection would have been way too convenient.

Why did the soldiers suddenly just stop trying to capture Gwen and the girl? Were they informed by their earpieces it was okay? *TSK*

All the Gwen haters, please STFU. Do you think it's EASY for Gwen? Oh yes, she has Rhys, she has the baby. Ever heard of survivor's guilt? Jack isn't the only one who can feel guilty for being alive. Let's forget about the fact she lost three people whom she was very close to in the space of ONE YEAR. Let's forget that Jack running away means that she has to clear up the mess ALONE (yes, she has Rhys, and Rhys is a lovely man, but he wasn't part of Torchwood, he wasn't the one who held her as she cried over Ianto's dead body, he isn't responsible in the way that Gwen is). And let's forget that she's now UNEMPLOYED and pregnant and the economy is up the spout and round the bend. I can't see her going back to the police force after all this.

"You can't just run away."

"Yes, I can. Just watch me."

Great character exchange there. Oh yes, he can and he will, because that's how he's always dealt with things and the Doctor's not there to make him face what happened, and neither is Ianto.

And the women are left to clean up the men's messes: Beatrice and Bridget Spears clean up Brian Green's mess, Gwen cleans up Jack's. However much things change... they always stay the same.

Damn right that was bleak. And it was too bleak FOR ME. Which is saying something. This felt like TW's swan song, and I really hope it was, because I refuse to watch again. I am going to be a sobbing mess for the rest of the day.

Why exactly are people hating on Gwen? I have a tendency to swing back and forth on her during the other seasons, but I thought she was fantastic this series.

*hugs* It is saying something. Poor Kerry.

I would agree with that. Don't think it'll come back.

Why exactly are people hating on Gwen? I have a tendency to swing back and forth on her during the other seasons, but I thought she was fantastic this series.

Well, Kate puts it better than me. Basically, Gwen exists to be hated by a large part of the fandom for being shipped with Jack and now she's alive and Ianto is DEAD? The hatred is corrosive, let me tell you.

Once I am done wallowing, I think I will watch some of the 80s cartoons I downloaded yesterday. Nothing like a little Rainbow Brite to zap you out of a bad mood.

Well, that's just silly. :P Honestly. I've had my issues with Gwen, but they pretty revolve around her being kind of a jerk to Rhys. But they were so fantastic this series! I loved watching them.

Seriously, people need to chill out about shipping. And a lot of other things.

Eee, Rainbow Brite! I loved that show! :D

So is that...the end? I can't see how it could continue after that. Though I've grown attached to Gwen, it really isn't the same without Ianto and Jack. I suppose I could've done Ianto and Gwen...but not just Gwen. Except they've set up these other characters, like Lois. And at the end of Who, it seemed like Martha might join up again. I dunno. I just really don't want Torchwood to end. :(

Any idea when the next ep of Who is?

I really think it's the end. They did want to have Mickey and Martha in there, apparently, but Freema landed the Law & Order: UK role and Noel is busy writing and directing. Frankly, having finished the series, THANK GOD. I honestly don't think I could have handled it if Martha or Mickey (or BOTH) had been slaughtered. I would have been a big emotional mess if that had happened.

The Waters of Mars is apparently coming out 'at the end of the year', though I REALLY can't see it being a Christmas special. It looks like a horror story. Oh, and the Who specials are going to be getting darker as well, just to warn you.

I love Gwen she's is a brilliant character. And Eve Myles is a really good actress and so pretty :)

Eve was superlative in this series, I was mesmerised by her every time she was on screen.

I only caught the last oh 20 mins and it was painful. It did not pull any punches and I don't know if I'm proud that a show did that or just really surprised at the route they went.

The last 20 minutes? Just wait until you watch the whole series. I know a lot of people have been waiting until it's over to download and see it all back to back but I'm honestly not sure if that's a good idea now. It's so damn bleak. But honestly, that's why TW was conceived in the first place.

Brilliant summation! Gwen = AMAZINGNESS. It boggles the mind when others don't seem to comprehend this. CoE was fantastic imo.

Thanks! And yeah, it's hard to see why people dislike her, but being in the HP fandom, I'm used to people getting rabid about a girl coming between the hero and their favoured choice of partner. It WAS fantastic... I just need to repair my insides before I watch it again.
