The Anniversary

I was reminded that yesterday was the one year anniversary of the publication of Deathly Hallows. It was also the weekend when the floods became really serious and I came back to a house with no running water and, for two days, no electricity. I didn't talk about that much at the time because... well, I didn't see the point. Very British of me, I suppose. The managers at my work were amazing: they stocked in preparation for the worst and had baby wipes, food, perishables, everything for us. People who still had running water offered us their baths and showers and their washing machines. The managers also arranged for us to take a minibus to a leisure centre in Swindon (neighbouring county) and have showers there. Looking back, I wonder why I wasn't more upset. I'd been in Gloucester for less than a month when we were flooded. It took a month for things to get back to normal for us. Some people in Tewkesbury, which was worse off, have only just moved back in. Some are still living in caravans. I was lucky, since my sister lives in Bristol, just an hour down the train track but unaffected (despite living on the mouth of the Severn!). I probably used all her hot water with my washing and my shower.

For all my HP friends on the flist, what are your memories of 21/07/07?

On that day it arrived on my doorstep very early in the morning, I locked myself in my room, until I left to say 'Hagrid! oh my god Hedwig' then I finally got the sense of just how much this book could scar me and looked at it wearily for awhile.

Eventually finished and was rather satified... filled with the happy yet sad feeling you know? then of course was the trip to cornwall... having to go a day late because of the floods, going on the motorway with the tomtom and seeing flood water on either side of the road, all the while praying that it would stay where it was and no one would end up floating away, arriving at my cousins who smiled and stole my book.

It's kinda scary how fast time has moved, this entry has kind of scared me as that wasn't so long ago and now is the new trip soon! jeez.

Yeah, that sounds familiar. I was devastated by Hedwig's death.

Some people did float away. Good thing you'd already read your book when they stole it! ;)

Thanks for sharing your memories!

I didn't expect Hedwig to die... I mean I know she said that Hedwig had been like a stuffed toy for him or something, but she was the first present he ever got, he loved that owl. I just found it cruel!

Some people did float away? jeez... didn't know that. Well their mum was refusing to buy the book until the price went down or it came out on paperback... which would be nowish lol and Joseph knew I would have it, so they stole and I had to buy a new one.

No no it was interesting reading yours and others takes on the day that really doesn't feel that long ago!

I don't think Hedwig was like a stuffed toy at all! But I do see how difficult it would have been to take her on a journey. She is very noticeable and she would have got very cranky with Harry when he was obsessing with the Horcruxes.

Seven people died during the floods.

Ahhh... I hope you didn't mind too much?

Well yes she would have been noticable but she could have been hidden away, or not used much by him because of that... as mean as it sounds. I never found her like a stuffed toy either Hedwig amused me many times in the books.

:-( Have things been taken to prevent a simalar thing happening again? I knew what the news said just didn't know about the deaths, though so much was damaged.

Well I didn't really have much choice in the matter, and I would have been the nastiest person to just say 'ah well to bad kids!' and run off... they'd never have finished by the time I went home. It was the best option.
